Break The Uery

Remember, a well-crafted query letter can open doors. Good luck on your writing journey!

Do’s of Writing a Query Letter:

1. Address the Agent by Name: Personalize your query by using the agent’s name. Generic salutations like “To Whom It May Concern” are less likely to connect. Show that you’ve done your research.
2. Cut Right to the Chase: Hook the agent with your first sentence. Introduce the core of your manuscript—the hook—right away. Make it compelling.
3. Sell Your Manuscript: The summary of your book is crucial. Write it as if you’re crafting the back-cover copy. Condense the heart and soul of your story into one or two impactful paragraphs.
4. Explain Why You’ve Chosen This Specific Agent: Research the agent’s background. Mention a couple of books they represent and explain why your book fits well within that group. Target the right person.

Don’ts of Writing a Query Letter:

1. Being Verbally Unprepared: Lack of preparation shows. Take the time to research and understand the agent’s preferences and the industry norms.
2. Ignoring Conventional Format: Follow the standard letter-writing format. An improperly formatted letter signals unprofessionalism.
